Grown in Black Soil (GIBS)
Helping small and midsized farmers gain access to new higher value markets
Program Overview
Small and midsized farmers—particularly Black and underserved producers—face deeply entrenched barriers that limit their economic potential. Despite their vital contributions in food production and stewardship of agricultural landscapes, these farmers are often excluded from profitable markets due to systemic supply chain constraints and pervasive information gaps.
The Grown in Black Soil (GIBS) Program, is designed to equip farmers with the knowledge and tools needed to access and succeed in accessing higher-value markets. Through a blend of workshops and trainings, partner development opportunities, one-on-one consulting, and practical application, participants will develop the skills to grow their businesses, increase profitability, and secure long-term sustainability.
At the core of GIBS is Social Mass Balance (SMB)—an innovative accountability and measurement framework pioneered by Freedmen Heirs Foundation. SMB ensures transparency, traceability, and equitable value distribution across the supply chain.

Tangible Results
GIBS represents a transformative step toward an agricultural economy that values diversity, equity, and resilience. By investing in producer capacity, opening new market avenues, and fostering innovative, value-aligned partnerships, FHF is charting a path toward thriving livelihoods for Black and underserved farmers, and a healthier, more sustainable food system for all.
